The Bank can employ both direct and indirect/market-based monetary policy tools. In addition to the Repo rate, the other main market-based tool used is open market operations. This involves buying and selling Government securities to manage the levels of liquidity in the financial system. Too much liquidity can fuel inflation. Direct instruments primarily involve the use of reserve requirements. The Bank can also use a Secondary Reserve Requirement and Special Deposit Facilities if necessary.
